Personal, Social and Health Education

We have invested in a programme for PSHE called Jigsaw.

PSHE (Personal, social, health education)  helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage many of the critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face as they grow up and in adulthood.

By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, effective PSHE teaching can tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and improve the life chances of all pupils. At Whiteknights we follow the Jigsaw mindful approach to PSHE

Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive Scheme of Work for the whole Primary School from Reception through to Year 6. It brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. There are six jigsaw puzzle pieces of learning – Being me in my world, Celebrating differences, Dreams and goals, Healthy me, Relationships and Changing me.  All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people of the world. The new puzzle piece is launched at the start of each half term with a whole school  assembly and a display in the main hall; lessons take place every Friday afternoon throughout the school.

The creation of Jigsaw is motivated by the genuine belief that if attention is paid to supporting children’s personal development in a structured and developmentally appropriate way, this will not only improve their capacity to learn (across the curriculum) but will ultimately improve their life chances. That’s why Jigsaw is completely child-focussed. This is reflected in the way the lessons are structured:

• Improve their social skills to better enable collaborative learning (Connect us)

• Prepare them for learning (Calm me)

• Help the brain to focus on specific learning intentions (Open my mind)

• Initiate new learning (Tell me or show me)

• Facilitate learning activities to reinforce the new learning (Let me learn)

• Support them in reflecting on their learning and personal development (Help me reflect)
