Latin

As children move into Key stage 2, they are introduced to Latin, following the Minimus scheme of work. Our intent for the teaching of Latin is to teach children a broad and balanced curriculum, using Latin to support vocabulary development, a deeper understanding of grammatical structures in English and foreign languages and for children to investigate the derivatives of language alongside historical stories. The teaching of Latin follows a clear progression in line with age-related expectations.

Latin Year 3 to Year 6 Overview

Intent

  • All pupils will make strong progress in Latin, developing reading, writing, and speaking skills with accuracy, fluency, and enthusiasm.
  • Pupils will build cultural and linguistic knowledge through Roman history, comic strips, and understanding the Latin roots of modern languages.
  • The curriculum is designed to “Grow in Greatness,” closing gaps for disadvantaged pupils and preparing all learners for KS3 languages and future opportunities.

Implementation

  • Lessons are carefully structured with clear success criteria, modelling, and high-quality questioning to develop understanding and recall.
  • Pupils use dictionaries, comic strips, storybooks, and the Minimus scheme to develop independent skills and confidence in Latin.
  • Enrichment opportunities, including language clubs and cultural activities, reinforce learning and build engagement.

Impact

  • Pupils develop a love of Latin and can confidently read, write, and speak, recalling and applying their learning.
  • Work and lesson outcomes show progression in knowledge, vocabulary, and grammatical skills.
  • Pupils are confident communicators, resilient learners, and are prepared for the next stage of their education, including KS3 language study.
